Hypatia (Alexandria, 355 or 370 – Alexandria, 415 AD) was a Neo-Platonist philosopher, mathematician and astronomer. She was the daughter of Theon of Alexandria. She improved the design of the hydrometer, invented the plane astrolabe and the aerometer. As a result of her paganism, she was murdered by a group of fanatical Christians, probably spurred on by Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria.
