Aganice of Thessaly, Greek astronomer and philosopher from the 2nd to 1st centuries BC. Considered one of the first women astronomers, she understood the periods of lunar eclipses. Knowing the precise moment when the moon would be covered by the earth’s shadow made people believe she controlled the moon. Greek civilisation was very patriarchal and women took a secondary role in society. They were denied citizenship, were banned from political life and were dependent on a guardian. They were educated exclusively for married life and were confined to the gynaeceum, a part of the house reserved for women. Within such a misogynistic setting, if a woman had greater knowledge and understanding than a man, she must have been a witch. A crater on Venus bares her name as a tribute.
