Berta Karlik (Vienna 1904 - 1990) held a PhD in physics and was the first female professor at the University of Vienna. Working with Ernst Foyn, she published an article on radioactivity in seawater and discovered that astatine is produced from uranium and thorium decay. Her studies merging her knowledge of oceanography and radioactivity helped reveal the biological problem of uranium pollution in seawater.
