The Charlotte was perhaps created in the United Kingdom in the middle of the 18th century. It was a dessert reserved primarily for courtiers. It was originally baked for a long time, however at the beginning of the 19th century it started to be served cold. The Charlotte became popular among the higher social classes because they were able to afford the transportation of cut ice.
