Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (Aldeburgh, 1836 - 1917) was the first woman from Great Britain to be licensed in Medicine in 1865. Since she was a woman, she was unable to enrol in the medical schools and instead studied on her own in London hospitals. She was the general care nurse at Saint Mary’s dispensary, and in 1918 she turned it into a hospital called the New Hospital for Women and Children, where all the employees were female.
