Laura Bassi (Bologna, 1711 – 1778) was an Italian philosopher, scientist and professor. She was the first woman to give classes at a European university and the second to receive her PhD. She did not have many opportunities to give classes since it was not considered correct that she should teach a class full of men. She was only allowed to act as a teacher or give conferences at events to which women were invited.
