Garcia de Orta (Castelo de Vide 1501 — Goa 1568) was an explorer, physician and naturalist. Upon the order issued by the Catholic Kings to expel the Jews from Spain in 1942, his parents took refuge in Portugal. He was a pioneer in tropical medicine and pharmacognosy. He wrote the first Renaissance text on Eastern medicine.
