On 23 February 1987, astrophysicists Ian Shelton and Oscar Duhalde discovered the supernova SN 1987A. This supernova is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud about 168,000 light years from Earth. The progenitor star of SN 1987A had a mass of around 20 solar masses, a diameter around 40 times larger than our Sun.
