Janet Taylor (Wolsingham, 1804–1870) She was an English astronomer and navigator. She published several works on astronomy and navigation. She was considered a master in the art of navigation and founded an academy for sailors. She also produced and repaired navigational instruments. Her academy was highly regarded by the East India Company, Trinity House and the Admiralty. In recognition of her work, she was awarded medals by both the Kings of Prussia and the Netherlands. Her most renowned navigational instrument was the “mariner's calculator”.
