In 1572, Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe noticed a strange event in the constellation Cassiopaea. A new star had appeared that shone brighter than Jupiter and was visible for eighteen months. He described his discovery of supernova SN 1572 or Tycho’s Nova in a book entitled De Nova Stella, in which the word ‘nova’ appeared for the first time in astronomical vocabulary.
