“Vlaai”, also known as “Limburgse Vlaai”, is a typical cake from the Limburg region of the Netherlands. It is also shared with the regions along the border with Germany and Belgium. It is usually filled with cherries, but can also be made with other fruits like apples, apricots or currants. The dough is made with yeast and milk. Its origins lie in a flat bread called “Vladel”, which was often made by Germanic tribes. It was only eaten as a dessert on special occasions. It became famous at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to a baker called Maria Hubertina Hendrix, who stared to sell it at the train station in Weert, a city in the south of Limburg.
