Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (Aldeburgh, 1836 – 1917) was the first woman in Great Britain to graduate in medicine in 1865. As a woman she was unable to study at medical schools and studied on her own in London hospitals. She was general assistant at St. Mary’s Dispensary and in 1918 she converted it into a women-only hospital called the New Women’s Hospital.
