Granville T. Woods (Columbus 1856, New York 1910) was an electrical and mechanical engineer who invented a variety of devices related to the railroad industry. In 1887, he patented the Synchronous Multiple Railway Telegraph, making it possible for trains to communicate with the station and with other trains so that they knew exactly where they were at all times. Many of his inventions were sold to General Electric, Westinghouse and Bell Telephone.
