Garcia de Orta (Castelo de Vide 1501 – Goa 1568) was an explorer, physician and naturalist. Due to the order of expulsion of the Jews issued in Spain by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, his parents took refuge in Portugal. He was a pioneer of tropical medicine and pharmacognosy. His work was the first Renaissance text on oriental medicine.
