Janet Taylor (1804 Wolsingham -1870), was an English astronomer and expert navigator. She published several works on astronomy and navigation. She was considered a master in the art of navigation and founded an academy where she gave classes to sailors. She also produced and repaired instruments for navigation. Her academy was highly recommended by the East India Company, Trinity House and The Admiralty. In recognition of her work, she was awarded medals by the King of Prussia and Holland. Her best known instrument to aid navigation was the instrument known as the “Sailor’s Calculator”.
