Mary Anning (Lyme Regis, 1799 – 1847) was a palaeontologist and a fossil collector and merchant. Her most notable finds include the first skeleton of an ichthyosaurus and the first two plesiosaurus skeletons. Since she was a lower-class woman, a protestant but not an Anglican, she could not form part of the British scientific society at the beginning of the 19th century and her contributions were not cited.
