Maria Orosa e Ylagan (Taal, 1893 – Manila 1945) Filipino physician and pharmaceutical researcher. She worked in her parents’ grocery store and was a good student. She stowed away on a ship to the United States where she worked as a domestic servant and was eventually able to study pharmacy at the University of Washington. She returned to the Philippines where she developed alternatives for food preservation. She created a special clay pot for cooking food for the poor places in her country where there was no electricity. In World War II she was a captain and created food supplements. The Red Cross honored her with a posthumous award for her efforts to manufacture dietary supplements.
