Vlaai, also known as a Limburgse vlaai, is a typical cake from the Limburg region of the Netherlands. It is a dessert shared also with the border regions of Germany and Belgium. It is a cake usually filled with cherries, but can also be made with other fruits such as apples, apricots or currants, the dough is made with yeast and milk. It has its origin in the flat bread called Vladel that was baked by some Germanic tribes. It was a dessert that was only eaten at important celebrations. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became popular because a baker named Maria Hubertina Hendrix, started selling it at the train station in Weert, a city in southern Limburg.
